Question & Works - Xiongyue Yu Journal Entry 11

Three Questions:

1. The role of Black Woman Artists in the history of Black Culture and Art.
2. The connection between artistic expression and the actual political issues of the same time.
3. The significance of music and cultural festivals or arts exhibitions for the documentations and dissemination of Black cultural history,

Ten Pieces of Work:

1. The Liberation of Aunt Jemima 1972 – Betye Saar (pp. 112)

This painting uses the work items that women use in their daily lives, and expresses the social environment from a more life-life perspective.

2. Rainbow Mojo-Betye Saar (pp.123)

Using abstraction, which is rare in black art, as a form of expression, it shows the diversity of styles.

3. Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One 1968, film still – William Greaves (pp.119)

Through documentary photos, we can express the most realistic scenes of reality, and although they do not seem to have any practical meaning, it is the meaning of true records.

4. Eva the Babysitter 1973 – Emma Amos (pp.114)

It shows the profession and appearance of black women in daily life, using positive colors and styles to convey and express their inner thoughts.

5. House of Head – Betye Saar (pp.126)

African traditional styles have always been mysterious andexotic, and it is difficult to pass on the historical African cultural imprints in a modern and unique style.

6. A Man in a Bowler Hat 1976 – Dawoud Bey (pp.140)
7. Deas McNeil, the Barber 1976 – Dawoud Bey (pp.140)

The most traditional mono-photos, the most classic portrait shooing. All of these establish the unusual and distinctive nature of this photo.

8. Wanted Poster No.5 1969 – Charies White (pp.100)

The Wanted series was born at the height of the movement, and these artworks represent the political style of the art of the time from a unique and pure perspective.

9. Injustice Case 1970 – David Hammons (pp.104)

The cross-culture style of expression, which was able to integrate various art form in its time, is a strong guide even for modern art.

10. Photographs by Anthony Barboza in The Black Photographers Annual: Volume 3, 1975 (pp.139)

This is a classic work that documents historical costumes, environments and occupational types in the form of photographs at the same time.

In fact, it is not possible to distinguish Black Art from other art by the style of art, but only by the combination of the artistic content and historical and social conditions of the time to discover the significance of the study and the value of the collection.
